Hello, You Can Call Me MPJ

My name is Matthew Perryman Jones. I perform under my full, tripartite Welsh name because "Matt Jones" might be the most pedestrian name one could have. Over the years, that long name has been whittled down to "MPJ"... even my close friends call me that at this point. I like it.

Without going through a long, boring biography (you can find that on my Wikipedia page), I'll try to say as little about myself as possible while hopefully saying a lot.

PERSONALITY TYPE: For you astrology people, I'm a triple Capricorn with the "Mystic Rectangle" in my chart. I am an earthy fellow; however, ambition and discipline are not my strong suits, so I don't know how "Capricorn" I really am.

For you Enneagram people, I'm a 4w5 social/navigating type, and this tracks.

For you Myers-Briggs folks, I type as an INFP (yes, I am almost exclusively an internal person).

For those familiar with Human Design, I'm a Generator. It is true that when something comes across my path that is a "YES," I seem to have endless resources of energy to give to it. If I do things that are not a "YES," I live in frustration. (But that's probably true for everyone, right?)

HOME LIFE: I live in Nashville, TN, where I've been for the last 27 years. I am "Papa" to three amazing teenage humans, and I just dropped my eldest off at college this past week (which is crazy).

I'm an early riser. Right after I get up (usually between 5:30 and 6:00), I make coffee, sit on my front porch with my dog, Levi, and write down whatever dreams I can recall from the night's sleep. I am religious about this.

The front porch is my favorite part of my house. My life is embarrassingly simple. Books, coffee, and trees with birds are my must-haves. Lately, I've taken a liking to chess.

WHAT I'M LISTENING TO: Recently, a friend generously gifted me an amazing sound system. Life is so much better in hi-fi.

I actually don't listen to a ton of new music. On Sundays, I listen almost exclusively to Chet Baker or Simón Díaz. Otherwise, I've been enjoying the musical offerings of Other Lives, Searows (thanks to my kids for the introduction), Patrick Watson (I'm listening to Love Songs for Robots as I write this), Adrianne Lenker, Glass Beams, Father John Misty's latest record, along with my musical staples—Radiohead, Elbow, old R.E.M., and Pixies.

Most recently, I've been enjoying Phoebe Bridgers' new record.
